Anacostia "The Web Series" Home is Where the Heart Is.

Southeast Stylings Northeast Flair by Khadijah Ali-Coleman Anthony Anderson is the producerof the Web series “Anacostia.” ‘Anacostia,’ the Web Series Explodes Onto CyberSpaceAnthony Anderson, the producer and one of the stars of the new Web series “Anacostia,” set in the Anacostia area of Southeast, would be considered a DC success story by most people’s standards. An independent filmmaker, actor and producer, Anderson has several irons in the fire with the chief intention of bringing shine to his hometown of Southeast. “Anacostia is a training ground for adulthood.” Anderson states. “I don’t think I would be the person I am if I did not grow up in Anacostia. There is a certain toughness and certain realness that you face when growing up there. As a kid, you see the struggle to keep the lights on. You see the struggle to keep the kids safe. You see what your other friends are going through. It makes you want to strive for better.” Born in DC General Hospital and raised on Chicago Street, Anderson moved to the Montgomery County suburbs during his last year at Douglass Junior High yet never forgot his hometown. Despite the tragedy he endured – “Out of 20 young males I grew up with, only two are living.” – Anderson still believes Anacostia reared him to be a survivor. He named his production company Southeast Boy Productions as homage. Dancing to the Top“I started out wanting to be a hip-hop dancer,” laughs Anderson, 37. “The last music video I was in was for [rapper] DMX, and that was the last one because I fell off a table and hit my knee, and it got swollen. I was not leaving the set though, because I was a huge fan. If you look at the video ‘Get On the Floor,’ at the 1:25 minute mark you will see me in the video in the background as an extra talking to a girl, which was my reward for sticking around after falling off the table.” Anderson’s rich laughter fills the air as he recalls the memory. He credits his ability to laugh at himself as strong armor necessary to move forward in the show business industry. Though a career in dancing was not in the cards for Anderson, he transitioned into acting, getting small roles, while ultimately directing his own independent film, “The Ties that Bind” (2006), which enjoyed much local success. He later went on to produce the Velocity Awards show which debuted last year and were created to award local entertainers in Washington, DC, in the areas of film, music and theater.
This year he is producing “Anacostia,” a Web series set in the Anacostia community, with the hopes of being a trailblazer. “I want to start projects that aren’t already out there,” said Anderson. “Spike Lee said, ‘If you want to tell your story, you have to be the one telling it,’ and there are lots of stories being told. I want to tell them from an honest perspective.” Anderson admits though that the perspective may be honest often enough, but the series is ultimately very entertaining and most likely controversial. The Web series will feature an openly gay character and will rival television primetime soap operas like “Gossip Girl” and “Melrose Place” with its level of sexy mischief and mayhem. “The show is escapism,” he said. “It shows Anacostia in a completely different way that I don’t think people get a chance to see. People usually see ‘Local teen gets shot,’ but they don’t see everyday that there are people out there working, striving and having great lives.” Reality TV Star FeaturedThe teaser for the series was released on the internet in mid-August, and reviews from the public were mostly positive, many eager for the series to begin. On the popular social network Facebook, one person commented by writing, “I can’t wait for the show to begin. That man is horrible.” The “horrible” man the poster is referring to is the character Michael Stevenson, portrayed by Maryland-based actor Walter Maxfield Jones. In the teaser, Michael and his wife, Mia, have a heated exchange that leaves viewers curious about what is next for the married duo. “The first thing that viewers will see when the show debuts online is Michael Stevenson getting what he deserves. So the first episode starts off with a bang. The viewers see the present state of things, and then the 10 following episodes are all flashbacks that lead up to the present,” explains Anderson. Inspired by the “who-done-it” style made famous in primetime soap operas from the ‘80s, like “Dynasty,” “Knots Landing” and “Dallas,” Anderson believes he has brought back a formula that works, but he warns, “This is not your grandma’s soap opera.” Anderson features in the series a familiar face that fans of reality television will immediately recognize – VH-1’s “I Love New York” cast member Wil “Onix” Lash. Anderson met both Lash and Jones while working on another project and immediately contacted them when he began fleshing out the “Anacostia” series.
Anderson also brought into the mix local talent, actress and singer Tia Dae, who, he says, brought life into her character even before the cameras started rolling. “Tia’s character’s name is Deanna Talbort Grayson,” said Anderson. “When Tia Dae walked in for the audition, she looked completely different, dressed in character. I didn’t even recognize her. When she read for the part, I knew she was special, but seeing her on the set is unreal. People come on the set just to watch her scenes.” Local folks are also routinely brought to the set to serve as extras as well as to get an opportunity to be a part of the series while local businesses are often highlighted. “We have local advertisers that have allowed us to shoot in their spaces, and we appreciate it greatly. In return, we shoot a commercial for their establishment,” says Anderson. Nearing the end of the grueling taping schedule for the show, Anderson is hopeful that the show will make a splash and attract viewers and advertisers. “One thing we need is the proper funding. That is typical with independent projects. We would love to have some sponsors to donate things like craft services or pay for advertising on the website. Regardless, though, the show is different, and people will love it. We have characters women can relate to. Like, we have three plus-size actresses in different roles. On regular TV, if there was a full-figured woman featured, it will most likely be only one, and it is usually Mo’Nique. Our show is definitely TV for the new millennium.” The first season of “Anacostia” debuted Sept. 3. Visit www.anacostia-thewebseries.com/ for details. Khadijah Ali-Coleman is a performer and writer based in the Washington DC metro area.

Tupac’s Writings and Papers Archived At ATL’s Robert W. Woodruff Library for Scholarly Research

09/25/2009 · By Ronnie Gamble
The Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation (TASF) and Afeni Shakur-Davis, the mother of the late rapper, announced this week that they will partner with the Robert W. Woodruff Library of the Atlanta University Center to make available for scholarly research Shakur's manuscript writings and other papers.
Although most people recognize Tupac as a musician and then actor, he was also a writer, who penned the book The Rose That Grew From The Concrete when he was just 19 years old. It was released after his death, but went on to sell over 250,000 copies. It contains numerous poems in Tupac's own handwriting.
There are three more books -- Tupac Resurrection, Tupac Legacy and Tupac Remembered, which were all published following his death.
A collection of Tupac's writings are now being housed within the Woodruff Library's Archives & Special Collections Department. The collection features Shakur's handwritten lyrics and track listings, personal notes, video and film concepts, fan correspondence, promotional materials and other items providing a unique insight into his career and creative genius.
"The Woodruff Library Archives has done a phenomenal job archiving my son's materials," said Afeni of the partnership. "I thank their staff for partnering with my family and the Foundation in helping to make these important documents available in a professional manner that will benefit scholars for years to come."
Currently, the library's staff are re-housing the collection's 11 boxes of material into archival boxes and folders, and preparing a finding aid listing the categories and order of items included.
A digital (online) finding aid will be prepared to further enhance scholarly access. All of this, called The Tupac Shakur Collection, is expected to be open for research in Fall 2010.
"The Woodruff Library is honored to collaborate with the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation to preserve the artistic legacy of Tupac Shakur," said Loretta Parham, CEO & Library Director. "Mr. Shakur was a multi-dimensional artist who helped define a musical genre, and as the academic library serving four institutions of higher learning, it is our mission, as well as a great privilege, to help promote scholarship and research of his work, and the mechanics of his creative process and the hip hop culture."
The Woodruff Library of the Atlanta University Center (AUC) serves the collective research and information needs of Clark Atlanta University, the Interdenominational Theological Center, Morehouse College and Spelman College. It's Archives & Special Collections department is the repository for historical materials documenting the AUC institutions, as well as manuscript collections and organizational records, including the Morehouse College Martin Luther King Jr. Collection and the Maynard Jackson Mayoral Administrative Records.
In addition to the archival partnership with the Woodruff Library, the TASF has recruited some of the nation's top scholars to assemble the Tupac Shakur Secondary School Curriculum, a seventh-12th grade academic curriculum and a college-level reader. In this comprehensive curriculum, the poetry, music and views of Tupac Shakur are used to teach basic hip-hop studies units within academic disciplines such as fine arts, history and language arts.
Both the release of the secondary and college-level curriculums will coincide with the opening for research of The Tupac Shakur Collection at the Woodruff Library in Fall 2010.

So Sad! False Charges Dropped Against Accused Rapists

The four men – Jesus Ortiz, 19; Stalin Felipe, 19; Kevin Taveras, 20; and Rondell Bedward, 21, all of the New York metropolitan area – had been arrested, arraigned and jailed after the woman said they pulled her into a bathroom where they bound and raped her.
They were facing five counts of first-degree rape each, and bail had been set at a half-million dollars. Wednesday night, a judge dismissed all charges and ordered the men released. "Late this evening, during the continuation of the Nassau County Police Department's investigation of the allegation, and under questioning by my office's chief trial attorney and chief sex crimes prosecutor, the alleged victim of the sexual assault admitted that the encounter that took place early Sunday morning was consensual," said District Attorney Kathleen Rice. Rice said the charges centered on reports given by the woman.
The rape report, which stunned the Hofstra University community, was reminiscent of the case involving the Duke University lacrosse team in 2005. In that case, a Black exotic dancer accused four White members of the team of gang-raping her in the bathroom of a frat house where she had been hired to dance. She later recanted her charges and the men were exonerated, but not before their faces, and reputations, had been dragged through the public mud.

Kanye West Flips His WIG Again....

Kanye West has done it again. What better forum is there to blurt out nonsense than a stage, a microphone, and millions listening to every word you decide to unleash to the masses. The public should be used to the random word vomit that Kanye chooses to spit, but last night's MTV Awards went just a little too far. Peers and fans from over the globe voiced their disdain on Kanye's latest rant. I say that it was seven seconds too long. I was waiting for the cane to come and yank his babbling tail off the stage. Seems like Kanye should have left the bottle at home this time. I appreciated the outburst on former President Bush during the Katrina disaster, but I did not enjoy the self affirmation that he was the "New King of Pop". We all know that Kanye can not help himself when given a microphone and listeners, but give me a break. What did Taylor Swift do to him?
On A Positive Note: Beyonce gave Taylor the shine she deserved. Every artists deserves the stage when they win an award for their hard work. It takes a classy lady to extend such a gesture. You Are....... InTheMixWithTre'!! Posted by InTheMixWithTre'

DIRTY WORK: The 12 Hardest Industry Jobs

This Labor Day Weekend The Urban Daily wanted to highlight some of the hardest jobs in the music business. In no particular order we list the gigs that all college guidance counselors should steer their students away from.
Limo Driver/Chauffeur Forget driving Ms Dazy, when it comes to shuttling around celebrities it’s more like driving Ms Crazy. Not only do you have to drive the getaway car after nightclub shootings and take bribes to say the gun is yours, you might even get killed by a dumb ass basketball player playing with his gun.
Radio Program Director
This job is a magic trick to pull off because you have to dictate what people hear on the air but at the same time insist that you’re “giving the people what they want” when you play the same songs 20 times a day.
Mixtape/Mixshow/Club DJ Not only are you at the mercy of the Program Director who insists you play bullsh*t, you have to sneak in some actually good music during your 1am to 4 am time slot and still have to confront the drug dealers turned record execs at your club gig who want to know why you aren’t playing their records at the day job.
A&R Taye Diggs as A&R in "Brown Sugar" You are essentially a hired scapegoat who is charged with finding new talent that the label will ultimately not release music from or totally under-promote. With Tom from Myspace trying to make you completely obsolete you pay your bills by leaking music. (see Product manager)
Radio Promotions
The record label pays you to make sure a crappy record gets airplay no matter what. (See Program Director.)
Publicist
You are paid to convince us that this artist is worth a damn when you know deep down they’re a tax write-off for the label. Your artists miss appointments and scheduled interviews forcing you to take editors to lunch and send apologetic Tweets. (See Blogger/Journalist)
Road Manager
When the publicist is off of baby-sitting duty you are the day-to-day pacifier for the artist and their entourage of ten. Your foreign currency conversion skills are unmatched because your artists insist on buying the latest Air Force Ones in Germany with Euros they won in backstage dice games. You may have to break the occasional paparazzi camera as well.
Product Manager
When your artist is too hung-over from a night of Patron and pill popping to take photos for their album cover you must find a way to photoshop them in or take one from their Myspace page. And pray to God that the record doesn’t leak or it’s your head.
Weed Carrier
Not only must you have the best Sour on you at all times, you must carry jewels and run to the store for Redbull and condoms at any hour of the night. You must also facilitate liaisons between the rapper and groupies. If you’re not smart enough to get yours first you must settle for sloppy seconds. Do your job well and you may get a verse or two here or there.
Lawyer
You are the busiest person in entertainment. Whether it’s challenging paternity, civil suits for wrongful death or a nightclub shooting (see limo driver) your Batphone rings constantly. Even if you don’t win your case you must negotiate the rights for the reality TV show of their prison bid.
Party Promoter
You negotiate around outrageous bar guarantees with club owners and spend your days printing flyers and blasting emails about your events. Your hope is to get way more people to come than can actually fit in the venue and that no one gets shot waiting on the line outside.
Blogger/Journalist We see you Illseed... You never sleep. Ever. You get dozens of emails a day from publicists to cover their artists but there are fewer and fewer outlets willing to actually pay you for your work. You’ve had to trade in your pen for an iFlip camera having to compete with the same artists and their Youtube channels for scoops. And thanks to Word Press everyone thinks they can do what you do. If it weren’t for open bar parties and checks from Google ads you’d quit today.

US remembers victims of 9/11 terrorist attacks

NEW YORK - New York held a ceremony Friday on the eighth anniversary of the terrorist attacks that destroyed the World Trade Center’s twin towers, killing more than 2,700 people. Families of the victims and government officials met near the site of the attacks, known as Ground Zero, under a cold rainy early morning and began the ceremony with a minute of silence at 8:46 a.m. to mark the time when the first hijacked plane hit one of the two towers. At the same time at The White House in Washington, US President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle also held a minute of silence in tribute to the 184 people killed when another hijacked plane hit the Pentagon. Obama has declared Sep 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance. Obama joined families of the victims for a remembrance service at the Pentagon and to lay a wreath at the Pentagon memorial.
“From this day forward we will safeguard the memories of those who died by remembering the spirit of service that led our city with hope and helped to keep us strong,” New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said.
Bloomberg joined New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine, family members of the victims and a selected group of representatives of city departments, including police and firefighters, at Zuccotti Park near the World Trade Center site, for the ceremony. Names of those killed in the attacks were read by family members and volunteers. Similar ceremonies were held in past years.
Another ceremony was to be held at 10.03 a.m. (0603 GMT) in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, to remember the 40 victims of United Flight 93 that crashed there at that precise minute. Names of those killed were read.
The New York Daily News published a message by Obama, which called the terrorist attacks on Sep 11, 2001 a “tragedy that will be forever seared in the consciousness of our nation”. “No one can guarantee that there will never be another attack,” the message said. “But what I can guarantee - what I can promise - is that we will do everything within our power to reduce the likelihood of an attack, and that I will not hesitate to do what it takes to defend America.” The Daily News said Obama pledged his responsibility to protect the security of the American people and that his administration is taking steps to fight terrorism, such as tightening border security and building new partnerships around the world to dismantle Al Qaeda.

Kevin Liles to Leave Warner Music Group

By Nolan Strong

Liles recently appeared at a press conference in New York promoting Jay-Z’s upcoming album Blueprint 3, which is being distributed by Atlantic, a subsidiary of Warner Music Group. Today, Liles announced he was stepping down from his role as Executive Vice President, to pursue other business ventures.
"In the past couple weeks I've made one of the most important decisions of my life - to depart the Warner Music Group in order to focus more on new entrepreneurial endeavors in talent management, entertainment, media and my personal philanthropic and political passions,” Liles told AllHipHop.com in a statement. “I am thankful for the opportunities that Edgar and Lyor have given me, most recently in entrusting me with driving the company's global artist services strategy, which is redefining the way labels and artists work together. My work here is now complete and I'm excited about the next chapter of my life." Kevin Liles started his career at Def Jam as an unpaid intern in 1991. By 1993, he was the Mid-Atlantic Marketing Manager. By 1998, he was anointed President of the Def Jam Music Group. During his time at the label, he doubled the company’s revenues, by signing acts like Jay-Z, Irv Gotti and Murder Inc., DMX and numerous others. Liles was named EVP of Warner Music Group in 2004, shortly after Def Jam Chairman Lyor Cohen took over as CEO of Warner Music Group. "Kevin and I have worked together since the day he joined Def Jam as an intern 18 years ago,” said Lyor Cohen, WMG’s Chairman and CEO of Recorded Music. “He has become a trusted friend, a brilliant executive and an incredible business partner. Together, we have built companies, signed and developed fantastically talented artists, and brought some outstanding music to the world. Even though Kevin’s chosen to pursue a new challenge, we’ll continue to work together in many aspects of the entertainment industry. I’m so excited to see what’s next for Kev, and he takes with him all my love and respect."
Liles will continue to act as a consultant to Warner Music Group, in addition to pursuing other business ventures.
