Interview with Cedric Muhammad, former General Manager of Wu-Tang Clan, Discusses His New Books & More!

Cedric Muhammad was named a Member of the African Union’s First Congress of African Economists in November of 2008. He is a political strategist, monetary economist and business consultant who has advised members of Congress, multi-national corporations, music moguls, and foreign governments on strategy and economic policy. He has been published in the Wall Street Journal, and featured in American Banker. Before establishing his entrepreneurial development firm CM Cap, Cedric served as the General Manager of Wu-Tang Clan Management for the multi-platinum Hip- Hop music group. Muhammad attended Rutgers University majoring in Finance. THE ENTREPRENEURIAL SECRET: Starting a Business Without A Bank Loan, Collateral or Revenue is his first book. INTRODUCE US TO YOUR BOOK: THE ENTREPRENEURIAL SECRET is for anyone who has a small business or is thinking of starting one and looking for a broad overview of the process. I wrote it with the recently laid off professional, previously incarcerated individual, and single Mother in mind, as well as the Hip-Hop generation. In the book I talk about the journey and adventure of entrepreneurship in spiritual, technical and practical terms. There are three Volumes. Volume I: The Political Economy deals with cultural, economic, and political factors that affect the bottom line of every business. It also explains how the financial crisis has impacted the ability of entrepreneurs to access capital and what they can do to finance their dreams, outside of the commercial banking system. Volume II: The Business Principles lays out my own experience, study and tips like the importance of building your personal power, mastering etiquette and networking, negotiating deals and writing business plans. Volume III: The Personal Struggle revolves around the uphill road that success in entrepreneurship requires and the toll it can take on relationships. It is a poignant volume showing how some of the best qualities of the entrepreneurial personality can create imbalance in your personal and domestic life as well. Volume III also points to how to embrace suffering and strengthen your willpower on a spiritual and scientific level. WHERE ARE YOU FROM? HOW DID YOU START YOUR WRITING JOURNEY? AND WHERE DID YOUR PASSION FOR WRITING COME FROM? I lived all over the world as a young boy. By the time I was 8 I had already lived on 3 continents. But my middle and high school years were spent in a unique Black suburb of Philadelphia, the town of Willingboro, New Jersey. It is an interesting place – somewhere that residents of Philadelphia, Camden, Trenton, and Newark New Jersey, even New York City supposedly come to ‘escape’ harsh city life. It makes the town a great microcosm of America. I was raised under the golden rule and nominally as a Christian. I accepted Islam while in college, and continue to love the church and am grateful for what it instilled in me in terms of respect for the scriptures and the importance of an inner spiritual life. Since a Muslim is a lover of peace and Islam can be summed in one word ‘righteousness,’ I just see a Muslims and good Christians as people who are trying to do good or trying to do right. I see no conflict between it and the teachings of Jesus, which can be summed up as Freedom, Justice and Equality and basically his Sermon on the Mount. My passion for writing was instilled in me by my beautiful Mother – born in Panama and raised in Jamaica – who placed a premium on education and reading. Growing up as an ‘Army Brat’ – as my father (born in Harlem and raised in Brooklyn) was in the military for nearly 30 years, I kept a journal of my travels and memories as young boy and wrote letters to my childhood friends, staying in touch as we moved all around the world. To this day I have friendships with those that I kept in touch with through letter writing as a little boy. But I never realized I had a talent for it until 11th grade in high school and my sophomore year in College when on two separate occasions, instructors expressed how disappointed they were in how casually I treated my work. Their constructive criticism and confidence in me made me believe that I had something of value that deserved discipline and hard work. I’ve never been trained technically as a writer but I have received tips from great journalists and authors over the years and developed my own style. My writings on economics and business have been published in a diverse array of publications like The Wall Street Journal, Newsday, and The Final Call. WHY WAS THIS BOOK SO IMPORTANT TO CREATE? Because there is no single book or book series that I know of that properly and simultaneously connects how the political economy, personal struggle and business principles impact entrepreneurship. The public school system does not teach economics hardly at all. I only received 4 weeks of it in my senior year of high school. The media can’t explain it to the public in clear words and newspapers seem to only care about personal finance – 401 Ks, investing in the stock market and buying real estate – which is not entrepreneurship. The greatest source of wealth in this country has not come from investing in paper assets. It has come from building businesses. And lastly, the book publishing industry divides the subject of business into too many sub categories. All of this has contributed to ignorance and confusion. My clients and readers would always ask me for one book to recommend on the subject that would be comprehensive and I couldn’t do it. So, I guess in THE ENTREPRENEURIAL SECRET I have attempted to write the book that they and I wanted to read. HOW WILL YOUR BOOK IMPACT RELATIONSHIPS? I believe that a single chapter in Volume III: The Personal Struggle entitled, “The Secret Of Personal Relationships – The Entrepreneur and Those Around Them” may be the most important in the entire series because I deal with a subject that many don’t want to face which is that entrepreneurship is a deeply personal and spiritual decision and process. And the decision to start a business is made usually after we have entered into committed relationships. This creates a natural tension. We often are husbands, wives, daughters, sons, parents, boyfriends, girlfriends and best friends before we decide to pursue our dream. And this creates a conflict because building a business requires attention to detail, spontaneity, constant change, long hours, endurance and a high level of risk, while being in relationships can be about stability, fulfilling duties and circumstances and regularity. If you and your loved ones and inner circle are not on the same page you will experience gaps in the relationship that could require separation or reconciliation. I hope this book will make people on both sides of the relationship – the entrepreneur and the loved one – more sober about what is involved and at stake. I also hope the book will help strengthen relationships that have been strained by the pursuit of a business dream or renew those which have lost spirit from the daily trials and tribulations involved with an entrepreneurial undertaking. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY HAS BEEN YOUR MOST SIGNIFICANT ACHIEVEMENT WITH THIS BOOK? Judging from the reaction to the book I have succeeded in sharing and presenting my personal testimony, experience and years of study in ways that are relevant and helpful to others. I have a very unique background and it was important for me to weave in lessons from my life managing music groups, running political campaigns, and advising first-time entrepreneurs and world leaders who have to make bottom line decisions, in a way that was honest and true to my personal path. I also am proud of the fact that I wrote the book in a way that distinguishes me from so-called ‘gurus.’ I did not fall out of heaven with all the right answers, and neither did they although some allow people to think that of them. I actually have come up from the dirt. I know what it is like to lose confidence in yourself, be poor, without a place to live, to lose status and wealth suddenly. And I have made numerous mistakes and errors which have hurt myself and others. Yet, with the help of God, true friends, and the lessons of others who came before me I have always been able to ‘make something out of nothing.’ And that is the key to success for today’s entrepreneurs and those who have been laid off, terminated, or just come home from prison. If the bank won’t give you a loan, the government won’t give you a grant or contract, and no one will hire you, can you make something happen? Can you do for self or will you always be dependent upon others to create a job for you? My goal is not to look smart, holy or pure so that people will follow me. I want people to see some dirt, mud, imperfections, shortcomings and grime so they will know I know what I’m talking about! My goal is to serve people in their greatest hour of need and show them that all they have to do is look within themselves and in their immediate environment to become a creator and build a business organization according to spiritual, technical and practical principles. If I do my job right I will be rewarded and share in the consequences of any good work I perform on behalf of others. SHARE WITH US YOUR LATEST NEWS OR AWARDS: In March of 2009 I went to Nairobi, Kenya to participate in the African Union’s First Congress of African Economists of which I was named a Member. We are working on how Africa can unite its 53 countries into one common economic market. I was named and honored for my one-of-a kind proposal to unite the continent under a single currency backed by goal. A key to bringing Africa out of poverty will not be charity, government aid, or helping Africa borrow money on capital markets like many suggest. It will be determined by how successful we are in developing entrepreneurs and small businesses. It is the same with our inner cities and rural areas in the United States of America. Neither the U.S. government nor corporate America will ever be able to create enough jobs for us. I want to place entrepreneurship at the forefront of economic development all over the world. Snoop Dogg Credited For High School’s Football Success

December 18, 2009 by owner Filed under Entertainment, Inspiring/Motivating, Sports Football has long been the athletic stepchild at inner-city Crenshaw High School. Trophy cases are crammed with basketball awards. Gym walls are lined with hoops championship flags. But the football team is undefeated this season and headed for the California state championship bowl game this weekend, and the coach attributes part of the success to an unlikely off-field source: rapper Snoop Dogg. Nine of this year’s Crenshaw High School Cougars went through the 5-year-old Snoop Youth Football League, representing the first crop of varsity players to cut their teeth in the program. The league has produced standouts at other schools, but none has more players or a better record than Crenshaw. The league has made Snoop Dogg, whose real name is Calvin Broadus, a savior of sorts for football in an impoverished area of Los Angeles where gangs roam many of the streets. “It is more of an advantage to have kids who played in the Snoop Dogg league,” coach Robert Garrett said. “They also have the experience, the fundamentals and the attitude that guys who started from scratch don’t have.” Broadus’ reputation for raunchy lyrics and run-ins with the law brought some initial apprehension from the mostly single mothers who wanted to enroll their sons. “It was kind of hard to separate Snoop Dogg the entertainer from Snoop Dogg the coach, the father,” league Commissioner Haamid Wadood said. But the league soon caught on, especially when fathers with criminal records learned they could coach, unlike most other youth sports. Broadus, himself a former gang member, has several convictions for drugs and weapons offenses, and if the league didn’t allow ex-cons, there wouldn’t be enough coaches. Posted by InTheMixWithTre'

Ron Artest admits he used to drink Hennessy at halftime

By J.E. Skeets Leave it to Ron Artest(notes) to try and steal a little of Tiger Woods and Allen Iverson's(notes) headline thunder. In a lengthy and candid interview for the upcoming issue of Sporting News magazine, Artest — best known as the central figure in the infamous Malice at the Palace in Detroit — lets it fly, including a startling admission that he drank alcohol during games as a member of the Chicago Bulls. "I used to drink Hennessy ... at halftime," said Artest, who played with the Bulls from 1999-2002 and now is with the Los Angeles Lakers. "I [kept it] in my locker. I'd just walk to the liquor store [near the stadium] and get it." Note: For those unfamiliar with the prestigious alcohol landscape, Hennessy is a brand of cognac, which is a French variety of brandy. It contains 40 percent alcohol, and is reportedly North Korean leader Kim Jong-il's drink of choice. (Of course it is.) Artest has said, and done, a lot of wild things over his career, but this "halftime Henny" revelation might be the most shocking one yet. Is he admitting to being an alcoholic, but now, being older and more mature, recognizes the problem? Was he just a big kid thinking a little sip or two was all fun and games? Or, as can be the case with Ron-Ron sometimes, is he exaggerating the story to land bigger and bolder headlines? I don't know the answer, but let's hope it's something close to option one. Artest speaks openly in the interview on many other sensitive topics, including his life as a St. John's college basketball star ("I was a single pimp!"); his feeling toward The Brawl's instigator Ben Wallace(notes) ("I'm always in the mood to fight him"); and his plans to become a professional boxer ("In four years, I'm going to try to have my first fight"). Sharp is right: Ron should be obligated to give a feature-length interview at least once a month. What a character. Posted by InTheMixWithTre'

Sponsors continue to back Woods, but new details, no public appearance could cost him.

By: NANCY ARMOUR Associated Press 12/02/09 6:50 PM EST Longtime sponsors are sticking with Tiger Woods — for now. But the world's most famous athlete, who offered a "profound apology" Wednesday following allegations of infidelity, might find new deals hard to come by, marketing experts say, and the loyalty of existing sponsors could be tested by any additional tawdry stories or his reluctance to address the issue publicly. "Unfortunately for Tiger, the situation is not over," said Bob Williams, CEO of Burns Entertainment and Sports Marketing, which represents companies looking to hire celebrities to sell their brands. "The linchpin will be when he addresses the public for the first time," Williams said, adding that will help companies determine how they feel about him. Woods' apology came in a statement on his Web site, after a cover story in Us Weekly magazine reported that a Los Angeles cocktail waitress claimed to have had a 31-month affair with the world's No. 1 golfer. The magazine also published what it said was a voice mail — provided by the waitress, Jaimee Grubbs — that Woods left on her phone on Nov. 24, three days before his middle-of-the-night car crash outside his Florida home. Woods did not offer details of any alleged relationships but said he had "not been true to my values and the behavior my family deserves." Forbes estimated earlier this year that Woods was the first athlete to surpass $1 billion in career earnings, more than 80 percent of that coming from endorsements with companies such as Nike, Gillette, Gatorade and AT&T. Those are all long-term relationships, Octagon First Call's David Schwab said, partners not likely to dump him at the first rough patch. Nike, Gatorade and EA Sports all released statements Wednesday expressing their support or commitment to Woods, and Gillette said it had no plans to change its marketing programs. AT&T declined comment. "These are people who are invested with him in his foundation, his golf courses, across the board. So they're part of his family, too," said Schwab, who also links companies and celebrities for branding opportunities. In fact, cutting ties with Woods now could actually hurt a company, Schwab said. "Brands look at how impactful a spokesperson can be for their for brand but also what the public outcry or public opinion would be," he said. "If a brand drops him, there could potentially be negativity toward the brand for doing so. "That's why brands typically weather the storm." But companies that may have wanted to align themselves with Woods might rethink that — particularly companies whose target audience is women or children. Part of Woods' appeal has been his pristine image, off the course as well as on, and events of the last week have tainted that, making him an easy target. Jay Leno poked fun at Woods during his show Tuesday night. Spirit Airlines is trying to capitalize on his troubles, too, offering an "eye of the tiger" sale, which they're promoting with a video that shows a tiger in a baseball cap driving an SUV into a fire hydrant. Zeta Interactive's "Zeta Buzz" mines more than 100 million blogs, message boards and social media posts to analyze the feelings of potential consumers. In the past, terms most associated with Woods were "Masters," "golf" and "winning," Zeta CEO Al DiGuido said. In the last week, that's changed to "affair" and "cheat," DiGuido said. The tone of posts has also changed, he said. Before the car crash, 91 percent were positive. That's now down to 74 percent. The volume also has skyrocketed. Zeta Buzz found 900 posts related to Woods on Tuesday; from midnight to noon Wednesday, there were 2,000, DiGuido said. "As much as he wants to put this behind him, what's happening now is the alleged scandal is starting to fuel the buzz, and it's not positive for Tiger Woods," DiGuido said. "The volume is continuing to grow and the negative side of it is getting more intense. "It would be something that (if you're a sponsor) you would watch pretty closely because it starts to take on a life of its own." It's not just Woods who stands to lose. The Tiger Woods Foundation provides educational resources to disadvantaged children, with a $25 million learning center in Anaheim, Calif., and plans to build another in Washington, D.C. "With respect to the sponsors and partners, they've shown a tremendous amount of support in us and this event, and they've been supportive of the foundation and they've been proud of the work we've done the past 13 years with more than 10 million kids," Greg McLaughlin, foundation president and tournament director for Woods' Chevron World Challenge, said this week. "A lot of kids need our help and want our help, and we're going to continue to grow our foundation and provide valuable services to these kids," he said. Woods, who backed out of the tournament after the accident, again pleaded for privacy in his statement Wednesday, saying "problems within a family shouldn't have to mean public confessions." But that's not going to be good enough, the marketing experts said. Questions will continue to be asked until Woods himself answers them, they said. And the longer he goes without facing the public, the more fans and consumers will question the faith they had in him. "Sponsors are going to listen to the people who buy their products," said Michael Gordon, CEO of Group Gordon Strategic Communications in New York. "If he handles it well, and he still has the opportunity to do that, he can put this to bed. Currently, the way he's handling it is failing. "The language in the statement is perfect," Gordon added. "But he needs to come out and humanize it and say those words and answer a handful of tough questions on the subject. The more he avoids direct media contact, he creates more scrutiny of the situation." AP Golf Writer Doug Ferguson contributed to this report. http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/economy/ap/sponsors-continue-to-back-woods-but-new-details-no-public-appearance-could-cost-him-78368192.html Posted by InTheMixWithTre’

Metro wrestles with growing suicide problem

By: KYTJA WEIR Examiner Staff Writer November 23, 2009 When a woman put herself in the path of a Red Line train at the Brookland station Friday evening, she became the latest statistic in a growing problem for Metro. The woman was at the least the ninth person to kill herself using a Metro train this year. The alarming suicide toll includes a 15-year-old boy, a Metro employee and a 57-year-old man who jumped in front of a train just a week ago. The transit agency reported just two cases each in 2007 and 2008. "That could be an anomaly. It could just be an unusual streak," said Karen M. Marshall, who is overseeing a nationwide study into suicides by train for the American Association of Suicidology in Washington. Suicides sometimes follow each other in clusters, with suicidal people spurred on by hearing of other deaths. Metro's numbers are still small enough that it can be hard to draw conclusions. Other transit systems also are reporting more cases, Marshall said. It's too early to know if there are indeed more deaths or whether agencies are just paying more attention to the problem. "It also could be clusters that are not related to the agencies at all," Marshall said. Much remains unknown about what drives people to choose such a high-profile method of death, one that shakes up riders and traumatizes train operators. Much remains unknown about what drives people to choose such a high-profile method of death, one that shakes up riders and traumatizes train operators. Until three years ago, no one even knew how big the problem was nationwide because transit agencies and railroad companies are not required to report suicides to any federal agency.Marshall's researchers teamed up with the Federal Railroad Administration and the Federal Transit Administration and verified 350 suicides by train nationwide in one year. She said they believed the number was actually higher because the survey had gaps. That represents less than 2 percent of the estimated 33,000 suicides nationwide each year, Marshall said. "It's a very unusual phenomenon if you look at that," she said. "Still, there's a reason people choose it." Metro has tapped into the researchers' expertise. The transit agency is partnering with Marshall's group and D.C.'s Department of Mental Health, said Metro spokeswoman Angela Gates. She said Metro planned to develop a public education campaign for riders and an internal training program for all Metro employees to learn how to spot suicidal riders and intervene before it's too late. "The idea is to empower employees for certain things to look for," Gates said. Metro hopes to begin the program by the beginning of February, she said.

All Members Of Congress Being Investigated For Ethics Are Black

By JOHN BRESNAHAN
The House ethics committee is currently investigating seven African-American lawmakers — more than 15 percent of the total in the House. And an eighth black member, Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-Ill.), would be under investigation if the Justice Department hadn’t asked the committee to stand down. Not a single white lawmaker is currently the subject of a full-scale ethics committee probe.
The ethics committee declined to respond to questions about the racial disparity, and members of the Congressional Black Caucus are wary of talking about it on the record. But privately, some black members are outraged — and see in the numbers a worrisome trend in the actions of ethics watchdogs on and off Capitol Hill. “Is there concern whether someone is trying to set up [Congressional Black Caucus] members? Yeah, there is,” a black House Democrat said. “It looks as if there is somebody out there who understands what the rules [are] and sends names to the ethics committee with the goal of going after the [CBC].”
African-American politicians have long complained that they’re treated unfairly when ethical issues arise. Members of the Congressional Black Caucus are still fuming over Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s decision to oust then-Rep. William Jefferson (D-La.) from the House Ways and Means Committee in 2006, and some have argued that race plays a role in the ongoing efforts to remove Rep. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.) from his chairmanship of that committee.
Last week’s actions by the House ethics committee are sure to add fuel to the fire. The committee — which has one African-American lawmaker, Rep. G.K. Butterfield (D-N.C.), among its 10 members — on Thursday considered three referrals from the recently formed Office of Congressional Ethics. It dismissed a case against Rep. Sam Graves (R-Mo.), who is white, but agreed to open full-blown investigations of California Democratic Reps. Maxine Waters and Laura Richardson, both of whom are black.
The committee was already investigating five other African-Americans. Rangel is the subject of two different probes, one involving a host of issues he has put before the committee and another involving allegations that corporate funds may have been used improperly to pay for members’ trips to the Caribbean in 2007-08. Reps. Carolyn Kilpatrick (D-Mich.), Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) and Donald Payne (D-N.J.) and Del. Donna Christensen (D-U.S. Virgin Islands) are also included in the second of those investigations.
A document leaked to The Washington Post last week showed that nearly three dozen lawmakers have come under scrutiny this year by either the House ethics committee or the Office of Congressional Ethics, an independent watchdog created in 2008 at the insistence of Pelosi. While the list contained a substantial number of white lawmakers, the ethics committee has not yet launched formal investigative subcommittees with respect to any of them — as it has with the seven African-American members.
The OCE has also been a particular target of ire for the Congressional Black Caucus. Black lawmakers, including CBC Chairwoman Barbara Lee (D-Calif.), met with OCE officials earlier this year to raise their concerns. Spokesmen for Lee and the OCE both declined to comment. A number of CBC members opposed the resolution establishing the OCE, arguing that it was the wrong response to the Jack Abramoff lobbying scandal, which helped Democrats seize control of the House in 2006. Setting up the OCE “was a mistake,” Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.) told The Hill newspaper recently. “Congress has a long and rich history of overreacting to a crisis.”
Cleaver, though, now finds himself part of the four-member subcommittee that will investigate Waters, who voted against the OCE. Waters is being probed over her intervention with the Treasury Department on behalf of a minority-owned bank in which her husband served on the board and owned at least $250,000 in stock. While she has flatly denied engaging in any unethical or improper behavior in her dealings with OneUnited, Waters was described by colleagues and Democratic aides as “livid” over the ethics committee’s decision to investigate her.

The Catholic Church versus the D.C. Council

By: MICHAEL NEIBAUER
Examiner Staff Writer
November 13, 2009
D.C. Catholic leaders say forcing the archdiocese to provide adoption services for gay couples, health benefits for gay workers or space for gay events puts at risk services the church gives thousands of poor residents.
"We're not threatening to withdraw services," said Susan Gibbs, archdiocese spokeswoman. "We're not going to be allowed to provide services. We need to be certified, and to get certified you need to say you followed D.C. law."
The same-sex marriage legislation, as amended and adopted by the D.C. Council's judiciary committee, poses far-reaching consequences, the archdiocese claims. It would put homelessness services, crisis assistance for teenagers, and adoption and foster care programs all at risk, because the Catholic Church will not abide by a D.C. law requiring it to promote gay marriages, church officials said. The archdiocese receives roughly $18 million a year to provide those services and more to District residents.
It "appears to leave religious institutions susceptible" to lawsuits and the loss of government funding for a church's refusal to provide benefits for the spouse of a gay employee, to facilitate an adoption or foster care by a same-sex couple, and to make church halls available to gay couples for non-wedding-related events, Archdiocese Chancellor Jane Belford wrote to Councilman Phil Mendelson, judiciary committee chairman.
Catholic Charities served 68,000 D.C. residents in 2008, Gibbs said, and claims to be "the largest provider of beds for the homeless in the District," serving more than 1,400 people every night.
Its programs include health and dental care for the poor, vocational training, child care and after-school care, mental health and substance abuse treatment, crisis assistance, and foster care support and adoption counseling. D.C. Clergy United for Marriage responded Thursday that the Catholic Church was running a "cynical political ploy" by threatening to "turn their backs on thousands of D.C. Catholics" and other residents. Mendelson called it, simply, "rhetoric."
"I don't want to be cavalier in dismissing them," he said. "On that other hand, I don't think the council will legislate by threats." He added, "I certainly don't want to drive anybody out of business. But equality is equality." The original legislation drafted by at-large Councilman David Catania exempted all religious societies from the "promotion" of any gay marriage-related activities that ran contrary to their beliefs, provided those same services were not available to the general public.
The amended bill, which is expected to garner final council approval before Christmas, provides a blanket exemption for churches from any activity directly related to a gay wedding ceremony, as well as from the promotion of same-sex marriage through "religious programs, counseling, courses, or retreats." The church is not required to teach gay marriage in a classroom, for example, but it must provide adoption services for a gay married couple. "We can't," Gibbs said. "We just can't."

Meet Michelle Fenty, the Other First Lady of D.C.

Tuesday, November 10, 2009 10:00 AM by Cynthia Gordy She's an accomplished attorney and hands-on mother, married to an influential Washington, D.C. political leader. When they first met, she was assigned to serve as his mentor. She's been noted for her stylish wardrobe, and her name is Michelle. You may be thinking of Mrs. Obama--but we're talking about Washington's other first lady, Michelle Fenty. The wife of Washington, D.C. mayor Adrian Fenty, who has served in office for nearly three years, Mrs. Fenty was born and raised in London, the daughter of Jamaican immigrants, before moving to New York City with her family at age 18. She says she never envisioned herself as D.C's first lady when she met her future husband at Howard Law School in 1994. "Not in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine that he would run for mayor, but I think what most people don't necessarily understand is that his journey was much more of a natural progression than simply looking at the end result of his being mayor," she says in her chic British accent, listing her husband's former positions, including Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner and City Council member. "If you look at our lives, it was literally the next step in a progression, which was good because it gave us time to adjust." With three young children--nine-year-old twin sons Matthew and Andrew, and 11-month-old daughter Aerin--Mrs. Fenty certainly seems to have adjusted the challenges of her public capacity to suit her private life. Amid the benefits she attends and hosts, the charitable institutions with which she volunteers, and the speaking engagements she performs, she works as an attorney specializing in global technology. "I have spent a lot of years studying to be an attorney, and I felt it was important for me to continue to work and contribute," she says, "Not just to my household, but to my personal fulfillment as well." Mrs. Fenty also serves as president of the advisory board for Capital Breast Care Center, which provides free mammograms to underserved, low-income women in the District. "The breast cancer mortality rate in Washington, D.C. is among the highest in the country, and African-American women are twice as likely to die from the disease," she says, explaining why she got involved with the organization more than two years ago. "Given those two factors, I thought that it was important for me to do whatever I can to let residents know this, and provide mammogram screenings for women in the District." Family time, says Fenty, is another part of her hectic life that is absolutely critical, centered mostly on her children's activities. "My husband and I have had to remain very fluid and flexible with our schedules so we can adapt to not only the challenges from our professional lives, but also to our family," she says. "I basically approach each day knowing that I may not accomplish all the goals I set out to do in the morning, but I'm okay with that because, at the end of the day, I am trying to achieve so many things." http://www.essence.com/news/hot_topics_4/meet_michelle_fenty_first_lady_of_dc.php Posted By InTheMixWithTre’

The term "DMV", brought to you by the hard work of local rappers. And phone cards.

Rapper 20 Bello; Photograph by Darrow Montgomery Posted by Sarah Godfrey on Oct. 28, 2009, at 12:50 pm Thanks to the hard work of both hip-hop pioneers and young upstarts throughout D.C., Maryland, and Virginia, the DMV is now officially on the map. It’s also in the dictionary. The Urban Dictionary—but still. Most regions with thriving hip-hop scenes have catchy nicknames, but before the whole DMV acronym caught on in the mid-aughts, the greater nation’s capital lacked one. Chocolate City, popularized decades ago, was starting to get a little moldy, and it ignores both the all-important suburbs and the fact that D.C. is becoming more cream-filled by the day. There have been valiant efforts to make “The Middle East” (for middle East Coast, get it?) stick, but it didn’t happen. Ditto for “Tri-State,” which failed not only because it’s already taken but because, technically, only two states are involved. So where’d the acronym come from? In an informal poll of area hip-hop luminaries—from Judah to Kokayi, Head-Roc to Overok—the same three names came up over and over: Wale, DJ Rob AKA Mista DMV, and 20Bello. Actually, there was one other contender, too: MC-turntablist-producer DJ Eurok maintains the first use of the DMV to mean D.C., Maryland, and Virginia (rather than a certain dysfunctional city agency), was on local corner store phone cards emblazoned with phrases such as “Excellent DMV local access.” He may be right, but in terms of making the term hot, credit definitely goes to the hip-hop community. “Since I was a kid we always said ‘DC, Maryland, Virginia’ area in that order,” writes Tyrone Norris of Rosetta Stoned in an e-mail. “I think I hear DMV used most when describing the hip-hop scene in the area. If anyone really pushed that phrase, it was the rappers.” Wale certainly took “DMV” global—thanks to his major-label deal and increasingly high profile, he has been able to sprinkle the term in countless interviews and performances all over the country, but his manager says he didn’t coin the term and doesn’t claim to. “When I started managing him in 06 it was already becoming ubiquitous in the area,” Dan Weisman writes in an e-mail. DJ Rob has the distinction of being the first person to use the term on national TV: He was on MTV’s Sucka Free in 2006 and said he was representing “the DMV.” And when host DJ Cipha Sounds made a dumb joke about long lines, DJ Rob quickly checked him: “Naw, D.C., Maryland, and V-A—get it right,” he said. Rich, the owner of the Target Squad empire, says his crew, and Rob in particular, are the originators of the DMV movement—he recalls that DJ Rob and Target Squad introduced the term to former WKYS radio jock II Face the Wild Boy, who in turn popularized it with on-air personalities. “After II Face started saying it on the radio hard, then [WPGC] 95 started jumping on it,” he says. “And then it was like domino effect, it started jumping, jumping—everybody started saying it.” But Rich stops just short of saying Target Squad actually made up the acronym: “DMV is Department of Motor Vehicles, so of course we didn’t invent it. We wanted to copyright it, but our lawyers said, ‘No, are you crazy? That’s the Department of Motor Vehicles.’” Rapper 20Bello, on the other hand, says he was the first to call this area the DMV and has been using the term since 2003. He offers compelling evidence. 20 possesses a flier from that year, and although a date isn’t listed, he can convincingly authenticate it. “At the end of ’03, I started letting hair grow,” he says. “That’s when me and [fellow rapper] Hevewae did the promo flier. In ’04, ’05 I had cornrows—that was before I started growing my ’locks in ’06, when I was on the cover of City Paper. Before ’04, ’05, my hair wasn’t long, and that’s my picture on the DMV fliers.” In fact, 20 says his former partner Katt Galloway coined the abbreviation during a recording session for a song they did back in ’03, and from then on, 20 decided to put it on everything he did: T-shirts, Web sites such as DMV Undaground, open mic nights. He also recorded a track called “DMV” back in ’05. “I never wanted nothing out of it—I did it because I loved the music, the whole scene. If I didn’t do it, I wouldn’t waste my time saying I did—I don’t get no royalty check every time somebody says ‘DMV’—I get no benefit.” Both the Target Squad camp and 20Bello and crew have people to back up their claims; both also agree that while there are certain bragging rights that come with christening this area the “DMV,” the most important thing is that it has brought some unity to a formerly fragmented region and music scene. “Now you can’t rep D.C. without repping V-A or MD,” says Rich. “This area will be like the bext ATL, the next MIA—we can go platinum in this area,” says Rich. “The main reason I did it was because of unity,” says 20. “Nobody was supporting nobody, people weren’t coming out to the open mics…D.C. wouldn’t support V-A, Baltimore wouldn’t support D.C.…we had to get it under one banner. Now, if you’re rappin’, you’re part of the DMV.” http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/blogs/artsdesk/music/2009/10/28/area-codethe-termdmv-brought-to-you-by-the-hard-work-of-local-rappers-and-phone-cards/ www.targetsquad.com Posted by InTheMixWithTre'

New Morehouse College Policy Bans Sagging!!

By: Ismael AbduSalaam
In an attempt to eliminate “inappropriate attire,” prestigious HBCU and private institution Morehouse College has adopted a policy that bans sagging and other styles associated with Hip-Hop culture. The “Appropriate Attire Policy” initiative is the product of Morehouse President Michael Franklin, who is seeking to reestablish what he’s coined as the modern “Renaissance Man.” That individual, Franklin states, possesses the “5 Wells” of being well-spoken, well-read, well-traveled, well-dressed, and well-balanced. Sagging is said to have originated in the penal system, where prisoners were unable to keep their pants up due to belt confiscations to prevent suicides and murder. The style eventually made its way to popular culture courtesy of early 90’s Hip-Hop, when multi-platinum artists like Naughty By Nature and Kris Kross adopted sagging as an accessory to their fashion ensembles. Although viewed as a style for juveniles, some prominent Hip-Hop artists in their 30s and 40s still utilize sagging in videos, concert, and award show appearances. Along with the new sagging ban, students will not be allowed to sport any form of grillz, do-rags, hats, “stunna shades,” hoods, or pajamas to class.
In another controversial move, the Atlanta college has prohibited any students from wearing female clothing, such as dresses, tops, tunics, purses, and pumps. School officials have argued that none of the new rulings were designed to discriminate against students who identify with Hip-Hop or gay culture. Instead, President Franklin states he hopes to have the next generation of Morehouse graduates live up to the school’s legacy, as seen in notable alumni such as Martin Luther King, Jr, Spike Lee , Samuel Jackson, Maynard Jackson, and Saul Williams.
While acknowledging student reaction has been mixed, Morehouse Office of Student Services VP William Bynum explained that the majority of students would just have to make minor adjustments to their dress. "I would say that about 95 percent of the students on this campus feel that appearance matters to them," Bynum told the Maroon Tiger, Morehouse’s school newspaper. "We are not trying to isolate anyone that falls under a category, you can just look at it like its one out of eleven things being addressed." On the gay rights issue, Bynum revealed that administrators first consulted the campus' gay rights oganization Morehouse Safe Space, to make sure their policy was in order. “We talked about it and then they took a vote. Of the 27 people in the room, only 3 were against it,” Bynum stated. Morehouse College has an estimated student body of 2700, and is one of two black institutions to produce a Rhodes Scholar (1994, 2001, 2004).
At press time, the school has just completed its Homecoming Week, which featured concert appearances from Lupe Fiasco , B.O.B., and Roy Ayers.

Dr. Dre Says "F**k Rush Limbaugh"

By Roman Wolfe
Hip-Hop super producer Dr. Dre has weighed in on controversial talk show host Rush Limbaugh. The Hip-Hop producer is world famous for his work with rappers like Tupac Shakur, Snoop Dogg, Eminem and 50 Cent in addition to selling millions of records as a member of N.W.A. and as a solo artist.
Limbaugh was dropped from a group of investors who were attempting to bid for the
NFL's St. Louis Rams, due to his controversial views on race and politics.
A number of others have already spoke out against Limbaugh and his involvement with the SCP Worldwide investment group. Dr. Dre joins the list of Limbaugh critics, including Reverend Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and others. Last week SCP Worldwide chairman Dave Checketts dropped Limbaugh from the group's attempt to bid for the Rams, labeling his involvement "a complication and a distraction." "As such, we have decided to move forward without him and hope it will eventually lead us to a successful conclusion," Checketts said. When quizzed on the release of his long delayed album Detox, Dre was equally curt. "We doing it," Dre said.

IS THERE TOO MUCH HATERATION IN THE DMV?

CAN INDEPENDENT ARTIST GO MAINSTREAM WITHOUT A CHANGE OF LOCATION? There are many discussions throughout social networks asking whether or not being an independent artist from Washington, DC or the DMV is an advantage or disadvantage when trying to make it in mainstream entertainment. The question that seems to be the hot topic in most forums is “Do you have to leave the DMV to be successful?” Being passionate myself about the grind that must be put forth by any artist, I immediately said “no”. Why would an artist have to leave the DMV to peruse their dreams? Why can’t this feat be accomplished without relocating? This question is not just for musicians, but for poets, painters, writers, actors, and producers. Maybe I find the idea of having to uproot yourself unwillingly to fulfill your dreams, especially when so many successful names in the entertainment industry today represent the DMV to the fullest. Did these artist leave before or after they were discovered? R&B LIVE DC - Keyonte - Black Alley http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i2ikzq4jW2Q Was it the high demand these artists generated as a rising star the reason to bounce to New York, Atlanta, or California, or was it because there is no love at home for lack of a better world? Let us not stop there. Let us talk about the resources available to independent artists to cross over to the mainstream. Is there any major record labels home to the DMV area? Aside from Duke Ellington School of the Arts and Howard University, there are not many forums for instruction of the arts. . Musical artist complain that there is no outlet for their music to be heard because of lack of radio play and format. You have to grease the palm of a disk jockey to get one spin at 3:00am when no one is listening. Some may say it is a daily hustle. If you stay on your grind, you will be successful. Others may argue that there is too much “HATIN” going on in the DMV. Now there is a bigger picture ladies and gentlemen. While the question of whether independent artist in the DMV area can make it to stardom without leaving home is a double-edged sword, here is a list of artists that still reside in the area despite the odds. Hip-Hop Producers Salaam Remi and Chucky Thompson share their experiences working with hip hop artists like NAS. To watch the complete interview, visit ThinkTalk.com http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Alk_lWHKpQ 1. Taby Bonney 2. Wale 3. Chucky Thompson 4. Raheem Devaughn 5. Keyonte’ 6. Michael Epps 7. Dave Chapelle 8. Jada Pinkette 9. Toni Braxton 10. Taraj P Henson 11. David Edwards 12. Maya 13. Royale Watkins Tabi Bonney http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_aP5X1VgWo Although some of the artists listed above may not currently reside in the DMV area, they remained on their own geographical soil as they were discovered into the mainstream. It took Wale to go to Canada and then return to DC building up a large following. Now you can find him plastered over MTV and other networks with Pop Star Lady Gaga. Taby Bonney has had success overseas as well and has brought it home to DC. I can tell you for a fact that they hate on Taby. No one can argue the fact that Taby Boney is one of the few if not only independent unsigned artist to appear on MTV’s $2 Dollar Bill Tour, as well as the “Rock the Vote” tour. Raheem Devaughn has had a Grammy nomination as well as Keyonte for songwriting. Chucky Thompson is a major producer who produced Biggie, Mary J Blidge, Amerie, and many more. Discussion on this topic can go on until infinity with positive and negative feedback, but while these artists flourished in their hometown and continue on with their daily grind, other artist did in fact seek other horizons to manifest their dreams into reality. David Edwards, a native Washingtonian is now in California fulfilling his dream as a director. You may remember him in his famous role playing himself on the Real World, roles in Half Baked, and House Party 3. Royale Watkins http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VyzUbE2v2VU Royale Watkins shinned on Def Comedy Jam and is currently hosting Comedy Mixtape Tour along -side the very talented Anthony Anderson. These two gentlemen alone had to pack their bags and head to the big city to pursue their careers. Was it hateration that caused these two artists to leave their hometown or was it due to a lack of resources? The DMV is a small city which turns the target market of artists into one big melting pot of competition so I have come to say that it is a double edged sword when answering the question which lingers in so many people’s mind. One thing is for certain, and two things are for sure. Artist born and raised in the DMV area always come home some time or another, and when they do, DC is represented to the fullest. Whether artist stop on the heads of other artist in order to get noticed or signed is a question that many can answer, with many different answers. My question to you is, are you going to let this stop you from your dreams and will you leave your hometown to escape the hate? Written by InTheMixWithTre'

Sharpton seeks rejection of Limbaugh

http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=4553690 ST. LOUIS -- The Revs. Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson attacked the bid by Rush Limbaugh to buy the St. Louis Rams on Monday, saying the conservative radio host's track record on race should exclude him from owning an NFL team. Sharpton sent a letter to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, arguing that Limbaugh has been divisive and "anti-NFL" in some of his comments. Jackson said in a telephone interview that Limbaugh had made his wealth "appealing to the fears of whites" with an unending line of insults against blacks and other minorities. "The National Football League has set high standards for racial justice and inclusion," Jackson said. "He should not have the privilege of owning an NFL franchise -- and it is a privilege." The civil rights leader said he's had contact with numerous players and ex-players concerned about the bid. Limbaugh shot back at Sharpton on his radio show. "Now, this saddens me as well this disappoints me," he said. "I know Rev. Sharpton. Sharpton is better than this. He knows better than this. You know, I didn't judge Al Sharpton's fitness to be in radio when he wanted to earn an honest living for once, given his well-documented past as the author of the Tawana Brawley hoax. I believe in freedom and I also don't discriminate. "Limbaugh said last week that he is teaming up with St. Louis Blues hockey team owner Dave Checketts in a bid to buy the Rams. He has declined to discuss details of the offer, citing a confidentiality agreement. In 2003, Limbaugh worked briefly on ESPN's NFL pregame show. He resigned after saying Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb was overrated because the media wanted to see a black quarterback succeed. Transcripts posted on the radio host's Web site also say that on a January 2007 show, Limbaugh commented: "The NFL all too often looks like a game between the Bloods and the Crips without any weapons. There, I said it." Asked about Limbaugh's bid to purchase the winless Rams, McNabb said: "If he's rewarded to buy them, congratulations to him. But I won't be in St. Louis any time soon." NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said the league is aware of the concerns voiced by Sharpton and Jackson. "It is very early in the process and no transfer of ownership of the Rams has been presented to the league for review," Aiello said. The latest complaints came a day after executive director of the NFL Players Association, DeMaurice Smith, urged players to speak out against Limbaugh's bid. "I have asked our players to embrace their roles not only in the game of football but also as players and partners in the business of the NFL," Smith said in a statement Sunday. "They risk everything to play this game, they understand that risk and they live with that risk and its consequences for the rest of their life. "We also know that there is an ugly part of history and we will not risk going backwards, giving up, giving in or lying down to it." Players on the 0-5 Rams, who were routed by the Minnesota Vikings 38-10 on Sunday, tried to distance themselves from the controversy. "I'm paying attention, but I'm not even touching that one," running back Steven Jackson said. "Because if I start touching it I might go somewhere I don't want to go." Defensive end Chris Long said he just heard Monday that Limbaugh was part of a group seeking to purchase the team. His reaction: "Oh, is that the guy on the radio?" Reminded of Limbaugh's statements about McNabb, Long seemed to disapprove while adding he didn't care who owned the team. "I mean, those weren't great comments at all," Long said. "But it's not my job to really comment on that." Defensive end Leonard Little, the last remaining player from the Rams' Super Bowl championship after the 1999 season, didn't want to talk about it. "We've got a lot more things to worry about than who's going to be our owner," he said. Copyright 2009 by The Associated Press Posted by InTheMixWithTre'

The Silence Is Broken

(CNN) -- Kandi Burruss has broken her silence in the wake of the death of her fiancé, Ashley "A.J." Jewell. Kandi Burruss, shown in July at her recording studio, is grappling with the loss of her fiance. The newest cast member of Bravo's hit reality show "The Real Housewives of Atlanta" released a statement after Jewell died Saturday following a fistfight. "I am devastated by the loss of AJ," said a statement released by Burruss through her publicist. "His death comes on the heels of the passing of my beloved Uncle Ralph, and with both of them gone my heart is heavy with grief.
"I had spoken to AJ two hours before I got the call that he was in the hospital," the statement went on to say. "Never in a thousand years did I think it was going to be the last time I heard his voice. There are so many things that I should have said to him, wanted to say to him... But now it's too late." Police said Jewell and another man fought Friday night in the parking lot of the Atlanta strip club Body Tap. According to police reports, Jewell was taken to a hospital, where he died of blunt force trauma to the head. Fredrick Richardson was arrested on a charge of voluntary manslaughter after witnesses identified him and he was interviewed by police. Burruss, an award-winning singer-songwriter and former member of the R&B group Xscape, also posted a blog on the site "Hello Beautiful" in which she hailed Jewell for not only being a good father to his children, but also to "other children that he raised and loved like his own, including mine." View Tribute Video of AJ & Son http://www.bravotv.com/the-real-housewives-of-atlanta 'Housewives' cast member's fiance dies after fight. "So AJ was a father to many," Burruss said in the blog posting. "It truly bothered him the way he has been portrayed in the media and actually it has bothered me too. AJ was NOT a 'Scrub' like so many people like to blog and say. He had his own when we got together." The reality show documented Burruss' mother's disapproval of Jewell as a single father of six. Burruss spoke openly of negative comments about Jewell that appeared on Web sites and in the media. On her Twitter account, Burruss mentioned her surprise that Jewell had apparently set up an account on the networking site the day he died. "She neva took care of me, I paid the bills! Scrubs don't drive high line luxury cars that I own & buy 5 karat rings seriously," a post from that Twitter account said. "No Scrubs" was a Grammy-winning hit song co-written by Burruss and performed by the platinum-selling girl-group TLC. Burruss had reportedly told a radio station in August that the couple were on hiatus from their relationship, and the person posting to the Twitter account Burruss refers to as Jewell's identified himself as "Kandi's ex-fiance." Cast mates on the "Real Housewives of Atlanta" offered their condolences via Twitter. "Please Pray for my dear friend Kandi and her loss.I adored AJ and he will be misssed [sic] dearly," cast member Kim Zolciak wrote. In her blog, Burruss advised readers to be cognizant of time.
"When you're young you automatically assume that you got all the TIME in the world but then something like this happens and you realize that you're not guaranteed TIME," the blog said. "It brings to life so many sayings that people say like, 'Tell them that you love them everyday cuz you may never get to say it again' or "Don't go to bed mad cuz they may not be here tomorrow.'"

Michael Vick To Star In BET Reality Series In 2010

Michael Vick has climbed out of the dog house, and back into the spotlight, following his dog fighting conviction. He's back in the NFL and trying to rebuild his image, and is launching a new reality show to help do just that.
This week, Vick announced that he'll be starring in a new reality show on BET in January, where he'll show the general public how he's changed.
The upcoming show is called "The Michael Vick Project," and will focus on his re-entry into the NFL , while taking a look into his recent legal troubles and how he is trying to change the way he was living.
"I just want people to really get to know me as an individual," the NFL quarterback told the L.A. Times. "I am a human being. I've made some mistakes in the past, and I wish it had never happened. But it's not about how you fall, but about how you pick yourself up."
Despite changing his tune, some -- like PETA -- aren't buying it. They say that Vick isn't sincere about his apologies and his efforts are just attempted to rehabilitate his tarnished image with the public.
"People who abuse animals don't deserve to be rewarded," said PETA spokesman Dan Shannon. "They shouldn't be given multi-million dollar contracts ... or given the privilege of being a role model. We don't believe Michael Vick understands the seriousness of his crime. I think he's sorry he got caught, but only time will tell if he's truly remorseful."
Financial details regarding how much Vick is being paid for the show are currently unknown. He does, however, owe creditors around $20 million, which he is paying over a six-year span to emerge from bankruptcy.
The upcoming show is being labeled a "docu-series" style show, and not a typical reality show like other athletes such as Terrell Owens, its producers said.
It will focus on Vick's personal struggles since his release, including the strains on his relationships with his fiance, Kijafa Frink, and his children. He is also set to revisit the federal prison in Leavenworth, Kan., where Vick spent 1 1/2 years behind bars and the Virginia property where he ran and financed a dogfighting ring.
"This show can be a blueprint for so many kids," Vick told the paper. "I want to show them that things are going to happen, that they're not going to get through life without dealing with some kind of adversity. I want to show that if they have a fall from grace, this is how they can turn it around. We want this to be a story of hope."
